Sanctuary broadcast commissions

ROUND 3

We are so excited to bring you the brilliant work of our latest Sanctuary Broadcast Commission artists Maha Alomari, Majid Adin and Gaël Le Cornec. We reached out to these international artists ,whose work we have long admired, to help us celebrate our tenth year and support their upcoming projects.

Gaël Le Cornec

Gaël is a theatre and film maker from Brazil based in London. Her work explores themes of identity, gender-based violence and environmental issues through the female perspective. We are thrilled to support her new work, Amazonia.

“Amazonia is a multimedia solo performance about memory, women’s heritage and climate change. It explores my relationship to my Amazonian roots. It goes all the way back to my childhood and the encounters with my grand-mother, a woman of a few words, a healer, with a profound knowledge of the natural resources in the rainforest. A woman who eventually succumbed to Alzheimer’s—a loss of her mental faculties that I see mirrored in the destruction of the largest forest in the world.”

Majid Adin

Majid is an artist and animator from Iran, now living in West Hampstead. He was forced to leave his home country, having been briefly imprisoned and politically exiled from Tehran after his blog upset the regime. Through collaboration with the Good Chance Ensemble, Majid won a competition to create the official music video for Elton John’s Rocket Man, brilliantly re-contextualising the lyrics as a refugee’s journey to Europe through his animation.

Keep your eyes peeled on December 17th for Majid’s interpretation of Where We Began!

"I am so pleased to have had this opportunity to make an illustration animation for 10th celebration of SBC theatre. I was excited when I looked at the background of SBC theatre and found out how they help to make positive social change. I am a refugee, and SBC work with many asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. Mostly I love one of their plays called ‘Where We Began’ so I started sketches and illustration based on the pictures of this play. It was a delightful creation process."

Maha Alomari

Maha is an artist and film maker from Yemen living in Leeds. Her interest in art began at an early age and she helped set up the first art house in her Taiz, her home city. Her skills range from film storyboards to character design and 2D animation. Maha’s work explores human rights and gender equality.

We are excited to release Maha’s illustration on 18th December!
