ABOUT US

WE PROUDLY SIT AT THE INTERSECTION OF ARTS, CULTURE & SOCIAL ACTIVISM.

We are the UK’s first and leading Theatre Company of Sanctuary, committed to making work with and for people seeking sanctuary (refugees, asylum seekers and new migrants). We proudly sit at the intersection of arts, culture & social activism. Through a rigorous and adventurous co-creation programme we provide thousands of people seeking sanctuary with regular, long-term making opportunities and events in order to celebrate, platform and ensure equality of opportunity.

Stand & Be Counted was founded in 2010 with a passion for platforming the voices we need more of. Our work is adventurous and highly political, merging lived experience with new ideas. We have always believed that theatre is a vital tool in the pursuit of positive social change and justice. Art is activism and by changing hearts and minds we will change policy.

Spotlight

Firas’ Story

I started my SBC journey in 2019 as a participant, Interpreter and Advisor. In 2021 I took on my first performance role, in Hidden Winter, as English and Arabic Narrator and joined the company as an Associate. I became the Community Director for Stand & Be Counted in 2022.

I am incredibly passionate about work that centres people seeking sanctuary and educates the public on these experiences. I lead on SBC’s Culturally Sensitive Spaces Initiative and Language Access - ensuring language skills are never a barrier for participants and audience. I work closely with participants before, during and after every creative project to provide ongoing support, remove barriers and ensure every opportunity is a safe and empowering experience. I’m fluent in 3 languages (Arabic, French and English) and have worked across the country as an Interpreter and Translator for various industries including work with Cast, Doncaster and the National Theatre.
