"From Steel To Gold" is a poetic homage to Sheffield, a city known for its quiet resilience, rich history, and welcoming spirit. Told from the perspective of someone who calls Sheffield home, the poem celebrates the city as a haven of healing and belonging—a place that doesn't boast about its greatness, yet overflows with stories and hidden beauty.
Poem
I took a walk in Sheffield…
The place I call home
A City that welcomed me
where my heart could heal and grow
The first City of Sanctuary
Maybe you didn’t know
Because
Sheffield doesn’t shout about
What makes it so
great
But woven into its history
Is a story to unfold
And the real ones
they know
It’s about more than hills and hendos
If you take a walk in Sheffield
You’ll see
Curtains of trees
With secret rivers
That flow beneath your feet
Seven hills
Climbing over communities
Reservoirs and Peaks
Echoes of steel
From Industrial pasts
Brilliant minds
Carving creative paths
A city of firsts:
First loves, first homes, first families
First kick-abouts
First rules
First teams
In 1857 something beautiful was conceived
Right here in Sheffield
And its legacy
Lives on
In every fan
In every club
In the hopes and the dreams
Of the child upon shoulders
And cheers in the pub
Mums having a game
Beside a practice for cubs
Lacing up
Hand me-downs
Caked in mud
It’s in the 5-a-sides
In every corner
cross-bar challenges
pies on order
It’s in penalties that never quite reach
But glory will come
That’s what we believe
The Lionesses
England’s homecoming Queens
Even Pele would say
Without Sheffield FC
There wouldn’t be me
In all of these things is
a Golden Thread
It’s Sheffield
The World’s first
Where football was born and bred
A home to all
Now let the word spread (?)
So when you take a walk here
And see people smile
You’ll know
Of a story that will always shine
From steel to gold
To us
This city
is the greatest of all time
In the hopes and the dreams
Of the child upon shoulders
And cheers in the pub
Mums having a game
Beside a practice for cubs
Lacing up
Hand me-downs
Caked in mud
It’s in the 5-a-sides
In every corner
cross-bar challenges

It’s in penalties that never quite reach
